My mother encouraged me as a young girl, to find joy in art! With her prodding, I began to draw and sketch, little did I know my artwork would actually be on the faces of women and men all throughout New England, all seeking to restore a youthful look that time has changed.
As a 12 year old girl watching my mom apply her Maybelline Medium Brow Pencil to her brow area was an everyday ritual. I didn’t realize how many people actually suffer painstakingly with drawing eyebrows, both men and women. My mother’s condition was a direct result of a form of Alopecia, called Trichotillomania (hair pulling). Fortunately, her hair on her head remained intact, but all her lashes and brows were lost.

It wasn’t until my mother's retirement to a warmer climate that the brow pencil concept of penciling in brows no longer endured. Frustrated with constantly reapplying eyebrow pencil, my mother commissioned me to find her a make-up that would “STAY ON.” Choosing to take the task, and not argue with a menopausal woman, I searched for the miracle product. A product that could handle the Southern heat and humidity as well as be fresh after going in the pool, only to discover it didn’t exist. The one thing that allured me though, was something called permanent cosmetics, a precise way to tattoo make-up into skin and it wouldn’t wash off. For myself as a redhead with blonde brows and lashes, it interested me to give definition to my eyes.
Since I already worked as a Regional Make-up Artist, tattooing the make-up shouldn’t be hard, and after all it was for my mother, no one I loved more! In 2003, I took the training that was about to revolutionize life as I knew it. I learned that tons of people were just like my mom, NO BROWS/NO LASHES. Yes, some were from over tweezing, some BFRD, many from Alopecia, others just sparse or light brows and lashes. I plunged headlong into a most interesting field I could ever imagine and never looked back since 2003 when I opened A Nu Yu in Guilford, CT.
I truly love my work Keeping America Beautiful! The simple request to find a brow pencil that stays on, has resulted in so many finding A Nu Yu! Look forward to meeting you soon and hearing your story too…
